VERY IMPORTANT!

Because Vermonter's have insisted on electing Democrats that are way out of touch to the needs of Vermonters; we're springing to action to warn you!

The Vermont Democrats have sponsored a bill that taxes the consumer 17 cents PER PLASTIC BAG when making a purchase. We're with you, we know it's tough and very expensive to be a college student these days. So please, for your sake... ask for a paper bag, and absolutely under no circumstances ask for a double-bag!

Here's the excerpt from the Vermont Republican Party's weekly e-mail.

On, Thursday, January 31st House Republicans made another attempt to adjourn the legislature one month early, saving $1 million. This money would be used to help low income Vermonters with their heating bills this winter. An amendment, offered by Rep. Patti Komline that would have accomplished this, was voted down largely on party lines. Every Democrat and Progressive voted against it. They need that extra month to do important things…

…Like tax your grocery bags and sandwich wrappers.

Yes, this past week saw the introduction of H.743, A Tax on Plastic Bags. This bill reads in part:

There shall be paid by the purchaser or recipient a tax of $0.17 on each plastic bag purchased or received in a retail transaction in this state or purchased or received for use in this state…. "Plastic bag" in this section shall mean a bag or wrapping provided by a wholesale or retail seller… (For details, CLICK HERE)

As the bill is written, this would mean that a Vermonter purchasing a box of two hundred fifty Ziploc sandwich bags would pay $42.50 in additional taxes on the purchase (plus 17 cents more if he or she "would like a bag for that").

No doubt this is not what the writers of the bill intended. But they never intend for the painful and expensive UNintended consequences of their foolish attempts to govern every single aspect of our lives.

So, are we ready to send them home early yet?

No wonder college students are fleeing the state. Gotta love the ideas that these Democrats come up with!

College Republicans from Middlebury, St. Michaels, Johnson State College, Champlain College, the University of Vermont, and the Vermont Law School will gather to elect a new state Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and a Public Relations Director.

Governor Jim Douglas will also be stopping by at 1pm to say hello, so be sure to arrive early!

The saga continues with the Champlain Current, and we swear that perhaps this appears to be fun for the Champlain Current staff. We've asked to sit down one on one and discuss our concerns with Danielle Frawley - but alas she appears not to feel comfortable with a chit-chat.

That's fine of course, we'll just attend all of the Editorial meetings, including the one this afternoon.

Many people on campus speak very highly of Ms. Frawley, so please forgive us when we say we are surprised that she is not eager to put this situation behind her and move towards a more balanced publication.

Ms. Frawley also defines herself as "Conservative" on her Facebook profile. Makes you wonder what's really going on with the Champlain Current.

More later, after we attend the meeting when the two Champlain College Republicans report back to us.

Perhaps, we're just too intimidating...

The saga continues. Danielle Frawley, Editor of the Champlain Current has responded our invitation to attend a meeting. But as we suspected, she declined. Below is a copy of her e-mail.

We'd really like to get this matter solved. After all, it is an injustice to the Champlain College community to continue to print articles that lack objectivity. We also firmly believe that this matter cannot be solved through e-mail.

We have requested that Ms. Frawley takes thirty minutes out of her busy, busy schedule to sit down with a couple members of the Champlain College Republican Executive Committee.

Drum Roll: The Champlain Current responds!

As you may recall from the previous post, the Champlain College Republicans sent a Letter to the Editor into the "Champlain Current." The purpose of the letter was to explain our displeasure with the subject matter, the unbalanced political articles, and the failure to use spell check on the pages of the student run publication.

Danielle Frawley, Editor of the "Champlain Current" responded to our Letter to the Editor on Monday and we've posted a copy of her response below.

It really is a shame that the "Current" fails to understand as to why students, faculty and staff feel their monthly publication is unbalanced and non-objective.

Originally, we began to draft a letter in response however we realized that it is of no use. Danielle and the staff of the Current will not understand the disservice they are providing the Champlain College Community until they are willing to participate in an in-person discussion.

Thus, we humbly request that Ms. Frawley attends the College Republican meeting on November 27th. We hope to discuss our disappointment and try to help the "Champlain Current" expand to a more objective and balanced paper.

Ms. Frawley did mention that the Editorial Board meets every Monday. We accept her invitation and a Champlain College Republican will be present at every meeting. And yes - we do feel all of our members have the ability to present objective, clear political articles.

Dear Champlain College Republicans,

In your letter to us you addressed Sarah Patterson’s “Head to Head” political article from the November issue of The Champlain Current. We would like to clarify the misunderstandings you have brought to our attention.

First of all, “Head to Head” is actually a column that will also be running in the next two issues of The Champlain Current. In the November issue we discussed two of the Democratic candidates running for presidency. There has already been an article written for the December issue profiling two of the Republican presidential candidates. The January issue will include two wild cards that are running in the presidential race. In the November issue, we made the mistake of not making it clear that this column is monthly.

We’re sorry that you feel that The Champlain Current is biased; hopefully this will help clear up any concerns of that nature.

We are being very careful with any political articles that run, and Sarah has been made aware of this and only writes the unbiased facts. She has been coming to every editorial meeting, and we have been working on this political column for several months now.

If you feel as though any of your members has the writing ability to present objective, clear political articles, feel free to attend any of our editorial meetings. We meet every Monday at 3:30 in the Vista Room of Miller Information Commons.

Champlain College Republicans Question Student Publication

To the staff of the “Champlain Current”:

As you are probably already aware of, we are the Champlain College Republicans. The name is pretty self-explanatory; but we do represent the silent majority and choose to promote intellectual, open and safe dialect on campus. Our organization and similar groups are important to the Champlain College community because it helps facilitate global awareness, as well as teach an ability to learn, understand and work with people that might not be on the same ideological wavelength.

We do take note, and are very displeased with the apparent bias tendencies that you publish monthly in the Champlain Current. It is a disservice to our community to continue to represent only one side; example being the article titled “Head to Head” written by Sarah Patterson.

In this article, you choose to represent only two Democratic Presidential candidates. The author attempts to say they are of significant importance only because one candidate is black and the other is a woman. However, the article also portrays these two Senators as the only viable Presidential candidates. The author completely neglects the other major political party, and we’d like to ask why.

Along with the Director of Instructional Development, Cinse Bonino; we too have heard “humming through the grapevine” that students, faculty and staff are being censored by your publication. We assumed that it was for political reasons, however your Editor-In Chief writes in response to Bonino’s letter: “We have no reason to censor or reject articles based on subject matter.” If that is the case, then why haven’t you published the submitted articles?

The Editor continues: “We are and will continue to be, very critical of our writers in terms of clarity, relevance, and writing skills.” That’s a very confusing statement considering that in the November issue alone, we alone counted over twenty grammar and spelling errors. One of the most obvious mistakes was that of the Advertising Manager’s title on page 2.

The article mentioned above is also poorly written. It changes tense several times, front-runners is misspelled, and it is clear that your design team chose to switch around the order in which things were printed without taking not to how the article had been organized.

So we ask again: why are you censoring the student body? Why do you feel it is up to you to decide what candidates voters should decide upon?

We implore you to raise the rhetoric and discussion level on campus, and also end you partisan leanings. We implore you to take a more objective stance and please, feel free to let us know how we can help with your transition to a more balanced publication. After all, it’s un-American to not let all opinions be heard.
